William Angliss Institute – CAHM a unique place to study

The Colombo Academy of Hospitality Management (CAHM) is a joined institute which runs collaboration with William Angliss institute in Melbourne and is based on the SLIIT campus in Malabe. This institute focuses all its efforts to develop and nourish Hospitality, Culinary Arts, Tourism Studies and Events. William Angliss is a well recognized institute with a history of 75 years and in Melbourne campus, they annually have over 21,500 local clients and students and 1,300 international students from over 45 countries with more than 100,000 graduates worldwide.

CAHM is a well facilitated institute with a well-equipped training kitchen, including a functioning in-house restaurant. All of their courses are designed with industry needs in mind, and work to ensure that there graduates are “Career Ready” while it tries to fit the view point of the parents to the dreams and likings of their child. CAHM gives a different form of education based on the needs and popularity of the tourism market in Sri Lanka.

Why Sri Lanka?

With the ending of the war which lasted nearly 30 years, Sri Lanka began to develop its opportunities to engage in industries like tourism and hotel management more than before. Considering these opportunities and other facts like Sri Lanka’s natural beauty, historical value, cultural values and several other unique facts, William Angliss Institute has put its efforts in helping the growth of the hospitality industry since 2013.

Curriculum

CAHM offers a verity of courses related to hotel management. Among them is the Advanced Diploma of Hospitality Management for duration of two years and Commercial co-operative Management for an 18 months’ time. While all the curriculums are been conducted in English, students are been given the opportunity to complete their degrees in even in Australia.

Recently CAHM introduced a diploma in Event Managements that could be completed in one and half years. This provides professional training for individuals who are interested in organizing functions, media events and conventions.

Job Market

With the development of the hospitality industry in Sri Lanka there is a huge job market created within the industry.  From CAHM about 30% of the graduates apply to go to Australia whiles the rest look for the career opportunities all around Sri Lanka.

Even though the competition is high, the industry is looking for employees who are highly trained, enthusiastic and has a high competency in English. While helping the students to accomplish those targets CAHM also help the students to build up strong relations with the industry through introducing them to the leading pioneers in the industry, through guest lecturers, interviews and through volunteering in banquets. Currently CAHM has 90% of employment rate which is a goldmine for dedicated and hard working students.

Development of the student

The curriculum at CAHM is mostly practical and is designed to challenge the student to think outside the box. This forces the students to be more creative and push the individual to develop and balance it up with his/her knowledge. CAHM is an institute that is willing to give skilled and creative Sri Lankans a chance to be productive and valuable through team work, designing and through creative attitude.

CAHM does not believe classroom learning. Therefore the students at CAHM get to look at the field in a more practical way and they even get the chance of conducting their own events and to participate in iconic events like banquets. CAHM is also the only representative of Sri Lanka that participates for the ‘YOUNG CHEF OLIMPIAD’, competing with countries like Canada, Switzerland and manages to remain within the top10.

At CAHM, they start from the very basic level, which provides a chance for a desired candidate to learn accurate methods. CAHM has a unique model and their curriculum is updated every 5 years.

CAHM gives the opportunity for their students to mix and mingle with national and international students, methods and events which provide them the opportunity to widen their knowledge and experience. Among many others, CAHM puts their best effort to add quality to what they deliver.

And even though it is challenging CAHM tries to keep the charges at a minimum affordable level for the students while giving the opportunity for the dropouts to resume their course if they decide to rejoin.

In discussion

Currently CAHM is planning to introduce six month short courses for an estimated price of Rs.30,000 to Sri Lanka. These courses will be beneficial for current employers in the industry, housewives or any other who has a passion for food and are looking to up skill or multi skill their talents.

Also CAHM is planning to give an opportunity for young people, those who are been accused and punished for petty crime, to give them the chance to develop self confidence and to introduce the career opportunities in hospitality management.

Requirements and requiting methods

To register for a course in CAHM a candidate should have five passes from O/L examination and the passion and a good attitude towards the industry. Competency in English language might be a added advantage as the curriculum is in English.

CAHM has three intakes per year in February, June and September. Due to the limited number of seating’s, applicants are reminded to send their applications ASAP.
