The Education Ministry says no questions will be formed from the GCE (A/L) syllabus for the Science stream from 2019. This is after concerns were raised that further guidelines on the Science syllabus had not been released, and that teachers and students will be faced with hardships. The National Institute of Education (NIE) is due to release the guidelines.

The Ministry had released the syllabus enabling teachers to cover the required study area in order for students to prepare for the A/L examination in August next year, but since the NIE were to issue further guidelines, teachers and students were awaiting them. Director, Education Ministry Science Branch, M P Vipulasena said that the questions will be based on the specified syllabus and they will not be going out of it. The new Science syllabus was implemented in schools after 2017.

The Ministry has issued a circular to all Provincial Education Secretaries, Commissioner General – Examinations, Director General NIE, Commissioner General Educational – Publications Department, Provincial Education Directors, Provincial Science Co-ordianting Officers, Education Directors, Divisional Education Directors, Zonal Science Assistant Directors, Science In-Service Advisors and all Principals.
