The inaugural Bachelor of Science Degree in Applied Accounting offered by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka (CA Sri Lanka) will commence in June this year.

The BSc. in Applied Accounting which has also been approved by the University Grants Commission is open for students with three passes (under the new syllabus) or four passes (under the old syllabus) in any subject stream at the GCE Advanced Level examination.
The degree is designed in two stages, namely the general degree programme which will be conducted over a period of three years covering six semesters and or the special degree which will be conducted over a period of four years covering eight semesters.

The primary aim of the degree programme is to create employable graduates with the required skills, competencies and industry knowledge to fulfil a successful accounting career. Upon completion, students will gain extensive knowledge and required skills in accounting practices, as this is the only degree programme in Sri Lanka that enables students to gain knowledge in the field of ‘Applied Accounting.’

CA Sri Lanka is the only professional organization in the country currently offering both a recognized professional qualification in accounting as well as a degree in accounting.

The course which will be conducted in English is designed mainly based on the core subject disciplines of financial accounting, management accounting and financial management. In addition, there are several sub-core disciplines which are quantitative and management techniques, business economics, information and communication technology, management and law. The auxiliary discipline is business communication.

Throughout the curricula, emphasis will be given to the development of skills and core competencies in critical and creative thinking, analytical ability, commitment to life-long learning, adaptability to situations, negotiations, interpersonal relations and team work, time and stress management, problem-solving skills and leadership skills.

The development of skills will be embedded in the teaching and learning processes of the course units and assessed through the internship and skills development programme at the end of each semester in the third and the final year.

The degree programme will be conducted by a fully-fledged faculty comprising of qualified professors, senior lecturers and industry professionals who are experts in the area.

CA Sri Lanka, which was established in 1959 by an Act of Parliament, is one of the largest professional organisations in the country with over 4300 members who are fully qualified chartered accountants with significant percentage of them playing a leading role in the country’s corporate sector in the capacity of chairmen, managing directors, chief executive officers, chief financial officers and directors.

The institute is also one of the largest tertiary education providers in the country outside the university system, with an active student base of over 41,000 who are currently studying the institute’s globally recognized chartered accounting programme.

CA Sri Lankan embarked on this landmark initiative in an effort to bridge the growing gap in the dearth of higher education opportunities available in the country.
