A book on the entire military history of Sri Lanka authored by L.M.H.Mendis titled as ‘ Assignment Peace in the Name of the Motherland ‘ ( Second Edition ) was launched on 26th February 2013 at Sri Lanka Navy Headquarters, Colombo. Rear Admiral Rohan Amarasinghe Commander of the Western Naval Area representing the Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy received the first copy from the author.

This book which runs in to a marathon 1034 pages documents the entire war history of the Eelam conflict from the early 1970s to the end of the war on 19th May 2009. This book is the author’s fifth and final book and is very valuable to all historians, academics and researchers who are interested in the subject. Very valuable photographs of senior military field commanders, key personalities of previous military operations in Sri Lanka along with several maps for easy reference are documented in this very valuable book.
Assignment Peace in the Name of the Motherland ( Second Edition ) documents not only the ground battles but also the sea and air actions in the entire military history. The author who first published his first book at the young age of 23 years in 2002 when he launched Volume I, published his remaining books in quick succession which all were commercial successes.

Hon. Member of Parliament Rear Admiral ( Retd ) Sarath Weerasekera who was the guest speaker, commented the author for his hard and untiring efforts in publishing this 1034 paged book. Hon. Member of Parliament Rear AdmiralSarath Weerasekera thanked the author for contributing for documenting the 30 year old war and contributing for war literature. In his introductory speech at the book launch, the author commented the fine team effort of the Army, Navy and the Air Force for liquidating the entire leadership of the LTTE during the humanitarian war and praised the past service commanders and their respective field commanders since 1983 for contributing for the annihilation of the LTTE in 2009. It was the author’s view that Sri Lanka’s history could have been different if not for the Indian intervention in Sri Lanka’s internal affaires in 1987 during the Vadamarachchi campaign and also if not for the fatal pressure mine attack which killed the entire northern command of Army and Navy on 8th August 1992. Among the other distinguished invitees present at the book launch were former Commander of the Army General Srilal Weerasooriya, former Commander of the Navy Admiral Daya Sandagiri, former Director General of the Sri Lanka Coast Guard Rear Admiral Ruwan Dias, former Navy Chief of Staff Rear Admiral D.K. Dassanayake, former Air Secretary of the Air Force Group Captain Pulasthi Jayasinghe, Director Naval Operations Commodore Niraja Attygalle, Director Naval Welfare Captain Nilantha Heenatigalle and the Sub Warden of S.Thomas ‘ College Mt.
