My country

My motherland is Sri Lanka. It is the Pearl of the Indian Ocean. It is a developing country. We have Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims and Burghers. There are religions such as Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism and Islam. We celebrate our independence on February 4
every year. Our National Anthem is ‘Sri Lanka Matha’. Our president is Mahinda Rajapaksa. I love my motherland very much.

My sportsmeet

My sportsmeet was on Thursday February 21, 2013. It was held in the Henry Pedris grounds. I took part in the Wheelbarrow race. I put the garland for the chief guest.
I enjoyed it a lot.

My favourite animal

My favourite animal is the squirrel. Squirrels are very small animals. These little animals are grey in colour and have three brown stripes on their back. They have a thin tail which fluffs up when they get scared or excited.

Baby squirrels drink their mother’s milk. When they grow up they eat fruits such as mango, banana and rambutan. Mother squirrels make their own nests on top of trees and sometimes inside houses. When babies are born the mother squirrel looks after them in the nest.

Eagles and snakes prey on squirrels. Squirrels are also scared of humans.

I love squirrels because they are small and cute.

Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport

Another milestone in Sri Lanka’s forward march towards its goal of becoming the ‘Wonder of Asia’ has been achieved!  The little known village of Mattala in the Hambanthota district will become the latest addition to international air travel as the new Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport. President Mahinda Rajapaksa has gifted the nation with the country’s second international airport.

Our school field trip to Kelaniya Temple

On February 21, we went to visit the Kelaniya Temple. We went there by our school bus. Our Lord Buddha visited Kelaniya on the third visit to Sri Lanka. Because of this reason it is very important as a sacred place.

We saw an enormous pagoda and we worshipped the pagoda first. Next we worshipped the Sacred Bodhi. Thirdly we worshipped the image of the Lord Buddha. We saw a huge Makara Thorana at the entrance of the temple. We offered flowers to the Lord Buddha.

After we worshipped at the Kelaniya Temple we visited Kochchikade Church and Kochchikade Kovil. I love my field trip very much.

A visit to a famous city

With its turquoise oceans, golden beaches and lush green islands, Cairns is one of the world’s most beautiful coastal areas.
This fishing state, situated in Northern Australia is home to an uncountable amount of marine life. It also boasts the largest coral reef the world, the renown ‘Great Barrier Reef’ which is so large, it is visible from outer space.

I got the chance to visit this great city in the holidays last year. We arrived there at 1pm (Aussie time) and rented a car for the visit. Our first meal there was at a motel in the town square. After a refreshing meal of ham, eggs and brown bread we visited the local botanical gardens and went to the cabin where we were to spend the night.

Early next morning, we went to the chapel in town for mass as it was Sunday and then to the dock to catch a cruise to a nearby island. We sailed at seven knots and reached the island in 40 minutes.

My father rented snorkels and soon after we were swimming in the massive reef. That one swim was the most fantastic swim in my life. The corals were like maroon flowers of different shapes and sizes. The coloured fish which playfully darted in the corals gave the impression that the corals had magically come to life. I got the chance to see wonderful creatures such as sea anemones, shoals of fish and even a shark up close in the underwater submarine ride.

It truly was a memorable vacation. It will be remembered as the ‘best trip ever’ in all my life.
