Korean pop culture coming to Colombo

View(s):

Award-winning Korean break dance outfit Jinjo Crew and pop band Queen will soon be in Colombo. Jinjo Crew is a globally recognised break dance team, currently ranked number one in the world. They have collected a grand slam of all five of the world’s greatest b-boy major leagues; Red Bull BC one 2008, battle of the year 2009, free style session 2011, R-16 Korea 2010,2011,2012 and UK b-boy championship 2012.

Queen is a female fusion Gukak (traditional Korean music) band that combines the sounds of East and West in a wide variety from traditional Korean music to the modern k-pop with their very unique musical instruments such as Geomungo (traditional Korean harp), Haekum (traditional Korean musical instrument-strings) and electric violin.

They are performing in Sri Lanka courtesy of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea and the Ministry of Culture and Arts of Sri Lanka who are co-organising the “Korea –Sri Lanka Friendship Evening” at the Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa theatre on April 25 and 26 from 6 p.m. onwards.

A welcome act will be performed by a dance troupe from the Ministry of Culture and the Arts of Sri Lanka. The event is free of charge and open to public but you need an invitation! Write your name, postal address, contact number and the date on which you wish to attend and email to culture.korembsl@gmail.com. Please note that only a limited number of invitations are available, so write in soon. All the relevant information is available through the Korean Embassy’s social media (facebook/korembsl, twitter/korembsl and the Embassy website) which is open to the public. Even non-facebook users can access the information.

The event celebrates the first anniversary of the state visit of President Mahinda Rajapaksa to the Republic of Korea. Following the popularity of the Korean tele-drama, Janggumi, Jewel in the Palace (Sujatha Diyani) recently and of K-pop amongst Sri Lankan youth, the Korean government believes that this cultural event will promote friendship and strengthen ties between Korea and Sri Lanka, a press release stated.
