International Inner Wheel Day celebrates female education

View(s):

International Inner Wheel Day was celebrated in Colombo earlier this month with the first in a series of awareness programmes to educate the girl child, on the need and her right to protect herself and her body, from sexual abuse and violations.

These programmes will continue to be conducted through the network of the 22 Inner Wheel Clubs and will be held in schools with the necessary approvals, by trained resource persons of the National Child Protection Authority.

International Inner Wheel, one of the largest women’s voluntary service organisations in the world was introduced to Sri Lanka with the formation of the Inner Wheel Club of Colombo in July 1965. Inner Wheel District 322 – Sri Lanka was established in 1985. At present there are 22 Clubs, two of which were inaugurated this year as the Next Generation Clubs to encourage younger women to join Inner Wheel.
