Sri Lanka wins 4 awards at Asia Pacific ICT Awards 2012 in Brunei Darussalam

Creating another milestone in the Asia Pacific ICT Alliance Awards (APICTA) Sri Lanka won 4 awards after competing with 16 countries. The winners of National Best Quality Software Awards (NBQSA) and Secondary students from Young Computer Scientist (YCS) competition participated at APICTA from 2nd to 6th December in Brunei Darussalam. A total of 153 winners from 11 member economies showcased the best of ICT applications from the public and private sector as well as students under 17 categories at this years’ competition.

Every year APICTA competition is held aimed at providing a platform for the innovators and entrepreneurs in the ICT sector in the region to benchmark their products and to network while stimulating economic & trade relations while enhancing the technology transfer, providing companies with business matching opportunities and increasing community awareness in ICT to bridge the digital divide. The competition has been held annually for the last 12 years, and was hosted by Brunei Darussalam this year. BCS The Chartered Institute for IT Sri Lanka section and FITIS Software Chapter Jointly represent Sri Lanka at APICTA Committees.

Thirteen winners of NBQSA 2012 & YCS 2012 competed at APICTA 2012 in seven categories. They were “Electronic Travel Authority” from Informatics Internationals Ltd. in the E-Government category; “SkyLease” from OpenArc Systems Management (Pvt) Ltd. and “TRANSBRIDGE Message Routing Software” from Fortunaglobal (Private) Limited in the Financial Applications category; “TrackIT”

In the Industrial Applications category; “Field Artillery Simulation System (FASS)” from University of Colombo School of Computing (UCSC) and Centre for Research and Development (CRD) under Ministry of Defence in the Research & Development category; “DuoSubscribe v.5” from Duo Software Private Limited in the Tools & Infrastructure Applications category; “Zhara Hospitality Suite” from John Keells Computer Services (JKCS) (Pvt) Ltd. in the Tourism & Hospitality category; “Siyapath (P2P Volunteer Computing Framework with Gossip Protocols)” from University of Moratuwa, “TrafficMate” from UCSC and “VIDAS (e-Learning platform for visually impaired)” from University of Moratuwa in the Tertiary Projects category; and “M-Backup (Mobile Backup)” from Lexicon International School, “Velenda – The Shopkeeper Game” from Nalanda College and “Edit++” from MR/Telijjawila Central College in the Secondary Student Projects.

The Sri Lankan participants won 4 Merit Awards at the APICTA 2012 in a highly competitive contest. The winners are Duo Software Private Limited for “DuoSubscribe v.5” from Tools & Infrastructure Applications category, University of Moratuwa for “VIDAS (e-Learning platform for visually impaired)” from Tertiary Students category, Lexicon International School for “M-Backup (Mobile Backup)” & Nalanda College for “Velenda – The Shopkeeper Game” from Secondary Students Category.

In addition to the participants, the Sri Lankan delegation consisted of Mr. Piyal de Silva (the Head of the Delegation) Dr. Dileepa De Silva (APICTA Judging Advisory board Chairman) Miss. Chadika Yahampath (Economy Coordinator for APICTA 2012), and the honorary judging team comprising Prof. Gihan Wikramanayake, Mr. Vajeendra S Kandegamage, Mr. Ruwan Amarasekara, Mr Hussain Shabbir and Mr. K V Kuganathan.

Consistently during the last few years, the selections of the Sri Lankan judging panels of NBQSA had been proven highly effective by the winners of NBQSA winning Gold and Merit awards APICTA for several years, competing with nations such as Australia, Singapore, Malaysia and China from East to India and Pakistan from West through most of South & South East Asian countries.
