Another new year with creative clusters, LIFT (Lanka Institute of Fashion Technology) commences its fulltime and part time fashion courses next week. A new beginning for many creative minds sets off on the 7th January 2013 with the future goal of becoming fashion professionals in the world.

Fashion is an art, a lifestyle, a creative science ……. could be defined in many ways. It is an important aspect of every individual’s life as we cloth ourselves day to day and communicates with others through our clothing in an indirect form. Fashion is an art that combines colour, texture silhouette and science to create a look for an individual or a group. It has become a necessity to life for every individual where in return it has resulted fashion business being one of the largest business ventures in the world that contributes to the economy of many parts of the world.
LIFT offers courses in fashion design where students could begin with the very basics and continue up to the degree level. The Full time courses offered are the Advanced Diploma in fashion design (2 ½ years) with the option of specialising in any one of the pathways – Fashion, Textiles for fashion or Footwear and Accessory design. Part time courses offered on Saturdays are The Diploma in Fashion Design (1 ½ years), Diploma in Fashion Marketing (1 year) and Foundation in Art & Design (1 year on Fridays & Saturdays). Students who wish to continue part of their studies abroad have the opportunity to complete their final year of the degree at the University of Northampton – UK and further move on to Masters Levels at the same university.

Advanced Diploma in Fashion Design

Advanced Diploma in Fashion Design aims to provide a comprehensive and stimulating education for those wishing to realize ambitions in the Fashion industry. The course ensures students become fully conversant with a range of skills relevant to the central areas of Fashion Design including patternmaking, garment manufacture, textiles, fashion illustration & Visual studies, design development, historical studies, fashion business studies, Computer Aided Design, embroidery, draping, textile printing, pattern grading, and market research & portfolio development. Students interested in Textiles for Fashion or Footwear and Accessories can specialize in selected pathway in the 4th or the 5th semester of the course.

Diploma in Fashion Design

Diploma in fashion design aims to provide a comprehensive and stimulating education for those wishing to realize ambitions in the fashion industry. The course ensures students become fully conversant with a range of skills relevant to central areas of Fashion Design including pattern making, garment manufacture, textiles, fashion illustration, visual studies, design development & historical studies. Working individuals who are passionate for this course can register for the diploma as it is offered on Saturdays. Students after O/Levels can join this course and complete the first semester to be eligible to continue the Advanced diploma in fashion

Diploma in Fashion Marketing

Fashion Marketing is also offered on Saturday mornings and this course is ideal for the ones who wish to study the retail fashion business and marketing concepts. The blend of creativity and business will open new career options for these students in the area of visual merchandising, fashion buying, fashion retail store management and fashion retail promotion. The course covers the basics of marketing concepts, fashion trends, consumer behaviour, fashion retail, window displays, fashion branding and promotions. At the end of the course students will develop professional portfolios using CAD to represent their ideas visually.

BA Hons Fashion

All students on completion of the Advanced Diploma in Fashion can complete the final year of the BA (Hons) Fashion degree through the University of Northampton – UK, with a choice of studying in Sri Lanka or in the UK. Students can also apply for international merit based scholarships at this level.

Graduation and employability

Graduation of all fashion students are held with a formal catwalk show (New Designers Graduate Fashion Show) organised by the institute every year. In 2012 LIFT graduates employability reached up to 98%. Many of our designers are employed in leading garments factories and buying offices in sri lanka and abroad.
