Sri Lankan students going through the Graduate Institute of Science and Management (GISM) has formed a students’ association in both  Auckland and Palmerston North Campuses of Massey University in New Zealand. This is good news to futureGISM students who go to New Zealand for their studies because, through this association, they can get a valuable support from current and past students right from the arrival up to settling in in New Zealand for their studies and even later for a better life in New Zealand.

New Zealand is a popular study destination among the students in most of the countries including Sri Lanka. Most of the universities recruit students mainly into their February and July intakes for Bachelors and Masters programmes. There were about 3000 Sri Lankan students enrolled for studies in various educational institutions in February and July intakes in 2025 which is approximately 50% increase compared to that in the year 2024 (Source: https://www.enz.govt.nz/news-and-research/ed-news/spotlight-on-sri-lanka-a-growing-market-for-new-zealand).

Since 2010, GISM is the exclusive Education and Research partner in Sri Lanka for Massey University in New Zealand to deliver pathway programmes in various fields of studies to complete GISM Diploma and Higher Diploma before transferring to New Zealand. Massey University is one of the three main Universities in New Zealand andone of a top-ranked Universities in the world. Under this partnership collaboration, GISM delivers several Bachelors and Masters pathway programmes in popular and job-oriented fields of studies such as Business and Management, Information Sciences, Biosciences, Construction, Quantity Surveying, Agriculture, Emergency Management and Engineering with over 30 major specialisations. The students who join GISM can complete one or two years in this country and transfer to New Zealand to complete remaining part of the degree. Since the beginning, GISM has sent over 30 batches of students to New Zealand for various fields of studies in Bachelors and Masters level.

Recent study reveals that a rumour spread in Sri Lanka about difficulty in finding jobs in New Zealand is somewhat not totally a false information because there are many who have gone to this country recently on student visa and job visa are seriously struggling to find employment due to limited vacancies in the job market.

However, due to several reasons, for GISM students, this is not so a serious matter to consider. This study further concludes that the chance of getting a job mainly depends on the recognition of the education institute, the readiness as a job seeker to work and the programme that the student has followed at the educational institute.

There are many Sri Lankan students who have come to New Zealand directly or through some agents face this problem seriously because of their wrong decisions they have taken when selecting the institute for their study destination. Some do not consider the place and the education inst itution but decideonly based on the student international course fee when this is a few thousand lower compared to that in a reputed university. Then, unfortunately they realise this decision is wrong when they come to New Zealand to start their course sometimes in the institutions situated in rural areas with many lacks desires as they expected. This is mainly based on the improper information from which they were misled while they are in Sri Lanka. They realise their immediate decisions they have taken is not so meaningful and taken only on the urgency of leaving the home country justfor the requirement of settling in overseas.

Progress of GISM Students

Since 2010, there are hundreds of students who studied our Diploma, Higher Diploma and Postgraduate diploma programmes of New Zealand and UK pathways and most of them are extremely successful, and they live in New Zealand, UK and other countries including Canada more comfortably. Some of them have obtained Permanent Residency and Citizenship states and living in New Zealand and Australia with their families.

Therefore, as an education service provider, we have a responsibility to help future students to benefit from this opportunity while maintaining a productive relationship between GISM and our overseas partner universities for mutual benefits.

The principal reason that GISM students are successful with their studies and their life in New Zealand is mainly the initial guidance and the international quality of the teaching and well-organised practical sessions provide by well-experienced qualified panel of lecturers of international exposure to the student to gain both theory and practical knowledge during the initial period they study in Sri Lanka before transferring to New Zealand. Apart from this, GISM also delivers English language classes to improve the knowledge and communication skill,
attitude and good practices to minimise the learning and communication gap from which most of the students face difficulties when they start in a developed country like New Zealand.

In the level of affordability, through GISM’s pathway arrangement, one student will gain a financial release from international course fee and living cost approximately Rs. 11.0 million by studying one year at GISM and this is almost a double if the student study two years at GISM and transfer to New Zealand.

The other important matter worth to consider is the transfer and placement facilities that the GISM provides to the students. GISM has students in many countries in the world. The Massey University Albany students and Palmerston North Students Associations (MUASLA and MUPNSLA) are helping new students to get settled in New Zealand at their initial stage in the Massey University. Also, there are special supports given to GISM pathway students in New Zealand through GISM representatives in both Albany and Palmerston North.

Who will benefit?

GISM has an international office to provide service to those who wish to go overseas studies directly or, through the pathway arrangement. if you are interested in GISM’s pathway arrangements, you can enter directly with Local or London A/L’s or, through GISM foundation course if you have good O/L results. If you already have a degree or equivalent qualification, you can join GISM to follow a postgraduate programme to transfer to Massey University to complete the Masters in one year. GISM helps students to plan their studies in proper way organised by free-of-charge consultation sessions with experienced academics and industry specialists. GISM’s International Division helps students with direct placement into Masters and PhD studies including visa services.
