Nurses are at the heart of care: why real-world communication matters

View(s):

Sri Lankan nurses have long been recognised around the world for their compassion, discipline and clinical skills. They play an essential role in keeping health systems functioning, often serving as the first point of comfort and the last to leave a patient’s bedside. As global demand for nurses continues to rise, particularly in ageing societies facing workforce shortages, Sri Lanka’s nursing talent has become even more visible and valued. Since 2022, more than 4,600 Sri Lankan health professionals – including thousands of nurses, have migrated overseas, reflecting global demand for healthcare professionals abroad.

But alongside clinical expertise, international employers remain clear about the one skill they consider fundamental to safe and effective practice: strong healthcare communication. A misheard dosage, an unclear symptom description, a misunderstood discharge instruction can all place patient safety at risk. Effective communication is not simply about speaking English fluently; it is about accuracy, empathy, active listening, and the ability to respond confidently during sensitive or stressful clinical situations.

For many Sri Lankan nurses, adapting to unfamiliar communication styles in foreign hospitals can be one of the greatest challenges of working abroad. This is precisely why the OET Test has become such an important bridge for those seeking international registration. Unlike general English tests, the OET Test was created specifically for healthcare professionals. Every component reflects real clinical environments, allowing nurses to demonstrate the skills they will rely on every day.

The listening and speaking elements, for instance, immerse candidates in authentic interactions, such as patient consultations, shift handovers, or discussions with senior clinicians. Reading tasks are based on actual medical texts, ensuring familiarity with guidelines and clinical updates. Writing tasks mirror the documentation nurses complete routinely, including referral and discharge letters. In essence, the OET Test is not testing abstract language knowledge; it is assessing the communication that underpins safe patient care.

This real world relevance is one reason international regulators and employers consistently recognise OET Test results as a strong indicator of readiness for practice. Nurses who prepare for the test report not only improved English skills but also greater confidence during their early months overseas. Hospitals, in turn, observe that OET qualified nurses tend to integrate more quickly into teams, navigate patient interactions more smoothly and deliver care with fewer communication errors.

Sri Lanka has an opportunity to continue strengthening its global reputation by supporting nurses to build these communication skills before they leave the country. As competition for international roles increases, nurses who can demonstrate both clinical competence and excellent communication will stand out. More importantly, they will arrive in new health systems equipped to advocate for patients, collaborate effectively and contribute to safer outcomes from their first day on the ward.

The world needs more skilled, compassionate nurses, and Sri Lanka has no shortage of them. By embracing the OET Test at ACBT Colombo & Kandy Sri Lankan nurses are not simply preparing for an exam; they are investing in their own confidence, their professional growth and the safety of the patients they will one day serve, whether at home or abroad. At a time when nurses are more essential than ever, empowering them with strong, real world communication skills ensures they remain at the very heart of care, wherever their careers take them.
