The 79th Battle of the Saints between St. Peter’s and St. Joseph’s as expected fizzled out to a tame draw at the P. Sara Stadium yesterday. The outcome of the encounter was almost sealed at the end of the first day’s play with the Peterites making 236 for 9 and the Josephians ending the day on 180 for 2.

But credit cannot be taken away from the spirited knock of 127 made by Josephian Sadeera Samarawickrama who for his effort was rewarded with the best batsman’s award. Sadeera and skipper Sachin Hewawasam was the toast of the Josephian supporters with the pair putting on a partnership of 110 runs for the third wicket.

The pair resuming the Josephian inning from their overnight score added a further 33 runs before they were separated with the dismissal of Sadeera whose knock comprised 13 boundaries a five and a six.
From there on the Josephians left with only three overs left to bat lost wickets at regular intervals which included skipper Hewawasam who made a valuable 53 which included six boundaries and they ended the inning making a formidable 281 for 8.
St. Peter’s batting the second time went on the rampage with openers Shasheen Fernando and Jason Buultjens having things their own way with the pair adding a quick fire 89 runs.

This followed with another second wicket stand of 104 runs between Shasheen and first inning top scorer Janith Liyanage before the former was dismissed having made 81.
The Peterites would have repented for the first inning debacle. Had they made this effort earlier it would have been a different story. Janith following his 70 made another brisk knock of 64 as the Peterites made the declaration when they lost three quick wickets having made 253 for 7 from 60.2 overs.

The target of 209 runs in 25 overs for the Josephians was going to be too much and though they began in the innings on a positive frame of mind it had to be abandoned when wickets began tumbling and ended the day on 138 for 5.
Josephians Dylan Fernandopulle and skipper Sachin Hewawasam were adjudged the best fielder and allrounder while Peterite Janith Liyanage took the man of the match award.
