Two events that hit the headlines and front pages last week: President Mahinda Rajapaksa dressed in sarong and banian like a farmer walking towards the paddy field at Nikaweratiya for the traditional Wap Magula. The other picture shows a different scene in Colombo -- an unemployed graduate who put up a show of defiance for two days in Colombo faces teargas attack by the police opposite the Fort Railway Station. Quarrel over corals Lankan garment industry urges ....
It is right off a picture postcard -- the bay, the sea and the fishing boats bobbing on the waters at Weligama. As one surveys the curve of the bay in Kapparatota, the eye suddenly falls upon a red gash on a headland sans ....

Yala animals get drought break Jinasena’s and the world of tyres
“When first I came to my new jungle home at the end of July, there had been no rain in this whole Ruhunu area. The good earth was parched and cracked and hard as concrete; trees, bushes, shrubs and grass all burnt a pale sienna brown.
The Jinasena family, coming out of the closet this week, unveiled probably Sri Lanka’s best known business secret -- running the world’s largest solid tyre company and now planning to bring home skilled Sri Lankans working overseas with competitive wages.“You may ask why have we been silent for so long?

An object lesson of how not to do it Burden on Suu Kyi’s soldiers
Would it be an overstatement if one says bungling is one of Sri Lanka’s national past times. From time immemorial we all have come across situations where we mishandle a seemingly trivial situation and let it grow into a huge national scale problem and then try to cover it up with lame... Junta chief Than Shwe, 74, hates Aung San Suu Kyi so much that he has banned all mention of her name in his presence. Now he says he has suddenly decided to seek a reconciliation with her. Her hour may have come. Her name has been on everyone's lips in Rangoon for weeks.

Love on the brain The battle at Tissamaharama
She walks by, trailing perfume and pheromones. His reaction, which she does not deign to notice, is entirely satisfactory. His jaw hits the floor, his eyes bulge, and then burst out of their sockets as his pupils turn to little red hearts, his pink tongue unrolls and hangs with a thwap, his heart thuds so loud and hard...
The army that advanced through the coastline joined the Tamil Adhikari's forces at Rambha Vihara. They camped there and rested for a few days. The rebels by this time were in the lower valley of the Walawe Ganga. They spread to the east of the area and began to establish their power there.

The traditional beach vacation Embekke is sinking and cracking
Narigama, Hikkaduwa is one of the most popular beach destinations in the world. Since the tourism boom in the seventies, Hikkaduwa leads its way from the front to attract a major portion of Lanka's tourist arrivals. After almost three decades, the popularity for this place never changed.
The sanctum of the historic Embekke Devale dedicated to God Skanda or Kataragama is in danger of collapse, with the floor being attacked by weevils over the past several years. The Embekke Devale is known for its elaborate wood carvings consisting of some 514 distinctive designs carved on pillars and other surfaces of the temple.
