Super Muslim banned as Govt. updates terror list
View(s):A Muslim terror group, formed in India in 2018 ahead of the Easter Sunday attack, is the latest addition to Sri Lanka’s list of proscribed organisations and designated persons, according to a revised Extraordinary Gazette released this week.
The organisation, known as Super Muslim a.k.a. Sahabi Tharika, the newest addition to the list, is reported to have been operational in Sri Lanka since 2019. With its address in Kalmunakudi, the entity is operating through a Telegram channel,according to the January 6-dated Extraordinary Gazette.
The notice was issued by the Defence Ministry Secretary, Air Vice Marshal (retired) Sampath Thuyacontha, in terms of Section 4(7) of the United Nations Regulation Act No. 1 of 2012.
The revised list also extended the ban on Tamil diaspora and Muslim organisations for engaging in terrorism-related activities and terrorism funding.
Aside from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and the National Thowheed Jamath (NTJ), other groups that continue to remain on the list include the Tamil Rehabilitation Organisation (TRO), the World Tamil Movement (WTM), the Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam (TGTE), the Jama’athe Milla’athe Ibrahim (JMI), the Willayath As Seylani (WAS), and the Sri Lanka Islamic Student Movement (SLISM).
