The Government’s proposed amendments to the Online Safety Act (OSA) will tighten the law with regard to fake news, particularly the dissemination of unverified news, a senior government official said.

This will include clamping down on those who originate fake news which are then used to manufacture news that causes personal harm to people. “A lot of information is taken from social media and then telecast or broadcast as verified news. This is causing a lot of harm to individuals,” the official said.

A committee headed by Solicitor General Viraj Dayaratne which looked into the amendments onto the OSA will present its report this month following which it will be presented for Cabinet approval, the official said.

He added that the weaknesses in the original bill will also be dealt with in the new bill.

The bill is expected to be tabled in Parliament in February.
