“A place of hope”: Negombo Zonal Education Office rises from the deluge
View(s):With its mission to provide quality education, foster well-rounded personalities, and ensure sustainable development in the region’s schools aligning with national policies, the Negombo Zonal Education Office has taken its own steps to help those affected by Cyclone Ditwah.
The office recently organised a few workshops for those afflicted.
“We have a well-formed team for counsel and as a result have been able to help children, motivating them to be more innovative and creative and not be disheartened” Zonal Director of Education Mr. K.L.A.S. Kamburugamuwa told the Sunday Times.
“Our office has been turned into a place of hope, expectations and relief for teachers who come here burdened with thousands of problems” he said.

He said arrangements have been made to ensure that those calling over could get their matters attended to immediately.
The zonal director said that schools affected by the cyclone have been given relief by the government: 23 schools were given Rs. 1,207,750 each while 13 schools received Rs. 8, 150,000 each.
One of the issues faced by students is the non-payment of the Suraksha Insurance benefits. Eighteen school children from 01.06.2022 to 01.12. 2022 and 25 children from 2025.01.01-2025.06.30 in the Negombo Education Zone have not received their payments yet.
Mr. Kamburugamuwa with his staff of about 140 officers has been able to work with about 4000 teachers in the 3 divisions; viz. Negombo, Katana and Ja-Ela.
In 2024, 7458 students sat for the O/L Exam and 4524 qualified for A/L. While 4191 students sat for the A/L exam, 2791 got qualified for university entrance. 141 students had 3 A’ s. In the three divisions in the Negombo Education Zone there are 117 schools: Negombo has 32, Katana 45 and Ja-Ela, 40. Last year, the top 10 highest achieving schools from each division were awarded with an assessment certificate (a photo with the school staff) for O/L and A/L exams while all students who scored more than 100 marks at Grade 5 Scholarship exam were similarly felicitated.
