View(s):By Jayanie Madawala
The low pressure weather system passed across north Sri Lanka yesterday without a major impact, the Meteorology Department said.
Though a deep depression that developed in the eastern sea area had moved slowly toward Sri Lanka from Friday onwards, the strength of it gradually reduced, turning it into a low pressure condition by yesterday evening.
Meteorology Department Director General, Athula Karunanayake said the condition gradually reduced throughout yesterday and therefore the rainy conditions prevailing in some areas would reduce from today.

Some parts of the northern province received rains and residents said it was colder than other days.
Badulla, Batticaloa and Trincomalee areas did not receive rains, although previous forecasts warned of heavy rain.
Due to the change in weather system following cyclone Ditwah and the destruction it caused to life and property, government authorities had taken precautionary measures and were prepared for any eventuality.
The Meteorology Department provided constant weather updates, while the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) and other stakeholders remained on alert.
The National Buildings Research Organization (NBRO) gave warnings directing people to evacuate from landslide prone areas. The Irrigation Department too acted by releasing water from tanks early on to mitigate the situation while emergency responders remained standby.
DMC director Pradeep Kodippili had warned public of landslide prone areas. He said safe locations had also been identified and public were made aware of these areas.
Coastal areas may still experience rough seas due to windy conditions and fishermen have been advised not to venture into the seas.
Meanwhile the Meteorology Department in its forecast said cloudy skies are expected over the southern half of the island. Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Northern Province and in Anuradhapura and Trincomalee districts.
Heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm is likely in some areas of the Northern Province. Several spells of showers may also occur in the North-Western, Central, Eastern, and Uva Provinces, as well as in the Polonnaruwa District.
Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places elsewhere during the evening or night, the Met. Department stated.
The NBRO has warned people in hilly areas to be vigilant of sudden changes in the area. Meanwhile 22 major reservoirs including Deduru Oya have reached spill levels. However Hydrology director of the Irrigation Department said none posed any risks.
