A road impassable
View(s):By Kanchana Kumara Ariyadasa
Residents of seven villages in the Dambulla Kandalama area say they face severe hardships due to the prolonged deterioration of the Kalogaha-ela main road, which has become impassable even on foot, after years without repairs.
The road, which is under the Dambulla Pradeshiya Sabha and serves communities from Kalogaha-ela to Kalundewa, is in a state of extreme disrepair. Government officials, schoolchildren, and villagers who depend on the route for daily travel are among those affected.
The area is also known for vegetable cultivation, further compounding the impact of the road’s condition.
With the road unusable, residents say they are forced to take a temporary route through a nearby cemetery. They note that children are frightened to walk through the cemetery, requiring parents to accompany them to and from school. Villagers claim that marriages and engagements among young people in the area have come to a halt, saying that the situation has reached a point where no ceremonies can be held in the villages.
Residents say they have informed successive governments, including the current administration, about the condition of the Kalogaha-ela road for years, but no lasting action has been taken. They say that many residents are unable to even identify the current Chairman of the Pradeshiya Sabha, as the only access road to the villages remains cut off. Residents are urging authorities to carry out immediate repairs to restore access.
When contacted, Dambulla Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman W M Thilakaratne said that a JCB machine had been deployed to prepare the road, but work could not continue for several days due to adverse weather conditions.
