The Illankai Thamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK) has given notice to its parliamentarian Sivagnanam Shritharan to resign from the Constitutional Council (CC) on the grounds that he had failed to act in the interest of the party in voting on the appointment of various officials.

The decision has been taken following an ITAK politburo meeting where the party officials discussed the MP’s choices at the CC voting.

Seven of the 10-member politburo had met and taken a unanimous decision, ITAK General Secretary M.A. Sumanthiran told the Sunday Times.

Mr Shritharan had been invited for the meeting but had excused himself, saying that he had to attend a meeting related to the Tissa Viharaya issue in Jaffna. The meeting was deferred until 2 p.m. for him to attend, but he did not turn up.

A letter signed by Mr Sumanthiran was sent to Mr Sritharan requesting that he tender his resignation within a week in a manner that does not harm the unity of the party.

Among the issues raised concerning the MP over his conduct at the CC has been the decision to vote in favour of the appointment of Ranga Dissanayake as the Director General of the Bribery Commission, instead of Deputy Solicitor General Mahawa Tennakoon, who received the highest marks at the interview.

The party also raised questions over the appointment of security force personnel to the Office of Reparations. Though the MP claimed that he did not attend the interview board, it was revealed that he had taken part in the meeting and raised no objections to the appointments.

The party also raised questions about Mr Sritharan’s vote in favour of the President’s nominee for the post of Auditor General.
