Mainly minor staff among the 41 convicted last year: CIABOC report
View(s):Forty one persons were convicted under bribery and corruption charges by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) last year, but most of them were minor staff attached to regional offices, according to a progress report by the anti-corruption agency.
According to the report of the CIABOC from January 1 to November 30 last year, 41 persons were convicted through 35 convictions. Most of the convicts are minor staff ranging from a sanitary labourer, a linesman, a veterinary officer and a police constable to an Agrarian Development Officer.
By November 30 last year, 270 cases had been pending in High Courts, 16 in Magistrate Courts, while one was before a Trial at Bar.
Last year alone, the Commission received a record number of 7,811 complaints, of which only 439 complaints were referred for further investigation. At least 2,546 complaints remain pending further investigation, according to the progress report.
Of the total 119 raids carried out by the Commission, 61 turned out to be effective ones, where 76 persons were arrested.
The total income the governement received due to the prosecutions from the period is around Rs 1,565,500 as fines imposed by the High Courts and Rs 1,056,000 as penalties by the High Court. In addition to the compensation of Rs 18,000 ordered by the High Court, Rs 150,000 was also confiscated through the courts as well while through the Magistrate Courts, Rs 30,000 was imposed as a fine.
