A ban on tuition classes, five days ahead of the GCE- Advanced Level, is to be implemented with the assistance of the Police.
Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena announced that teachers should refrain from mass or individual teaching, holding seminars and workshops and discussions, five days prior the examination.

“The Police can take action on any complaints against those violating the law’, Mr Gunawardena said.

The ministry has decided to enforce the rule to avoid question papers, or parts of it, leaking before the examination.

“This was a regulation that we were to bring in last year, however, due to many negative views, it was not introduced. However, this year, the Advisory Commission has approved its go ahead, to prevent such incidents from taking place. This year, we will ensure a more transparent and fair examination,” the minister said.

Last year, parts of the GCE- Ordinary Level, Science paper was leaked in Kiribathgoda area, before the examination, which ignited protests and agitation among most education groups.

The minister also said that teachers involved in paper making are strictly advised to refrain from teaching students, holding seminars or workshops.

“This is mostly reported in rural areas where students pay thousands to attend a lecture given by a teacher involved in paper making. This is prohibited, and if there are instances of such incidents taking place, we will take action against them,” Minister Gunawardena said.

He called on the public to inform the Examination’s Commissioner, of any violation of these rules.

This year, nearly 300,000 students are to sit for the A/L examinations to be held from August 5 to 31, while 328,714 students are to sit for the scholarship exam to be held on August 25.
