An ex-airman who pleaded guilty to raping a nine-year-old girl inside a school in the Matara district, in September 2011, was sentenced Thursday to 15-years RI, by Matara High Court Judge Priyantha de Silva.
He was also ordered to pay Rs 200,000 as compensation to the victim.
The rapist, Buddhika Kumara (32) of Telijjawila, a father of one, was also fined Rs 10,000, in default of which, was given an additional five months in prison.
The court also said that, failure to pay the compensation of Rs 200,000, would earn him three more months of imprisonment.
On the day of the incident, the victim, along with her sister, with a teacher’s permission, had come to the school to prepare the hall for the third term of the school. The victim had been playing behind the school premises when the suspect had taken her to a building, after giving her Rs 20.
Later, the girl was found lying unconscious in a pool of blood and was admitted to the Matara hospital.
Nine persons including two policemen, an invigilator, his assistant and the school watcher were apprehended by the people and handed over to the police. The men had gathered at the school, after the conclusion of the Advanced Level examination, to have a party. They had all been in a state of intoxication.
In handing down the sentence, the Matara High Court Judge said that persons who commit offences against children must be dealt with severely.
