Leadership

Leadership training is a very important part of the Americanites’ education process under the principal Rev. Fr. Prashad de Zoysa.
Many opportunities are provided to the students to demonstrate leadership skills not only as prefects and peer counselors, but also in organizing many events such as the weekly children’s assembly, the annual nativity play, the good Samaritan projects, the poson dansala etc.

Students are also taken on leadership camps and quite often trainers from USA hold seminars with interactive training for them.

Co-curricular Activities

The American International School is well-known for the many co-curricular activities the children are involved in, in support of the curriculum that they follow in each class. Debating, group projects and individual projects, weekly dramas depicting concepts from science, geography, history and literature that the students have studied that term, are some of the co-curricular activities that the students enjoy.

These activities give the students a hunger for knowledge and acquiring of more information on these topics through research.
In addition, the students from Montessori to Grade 7 are very enthusiastic about their baking and cookery day which takes place in the home-science room which has a special area built at a lower height to suit the tiny tots in the lower grades.

Education

The students follow the National Curriculum of England, leading to the Edexcel IGCSE and A/Levels. The IGCSE subjects include English, English Literature, French, Sinhala, Tamil, Mathematics, Biology, Human Biology, Chemistry, Physics, IT, Accounting, Business Studies, Economics, Geography and History.

The A/Level subjects include Core Mathematics, Mathematics (Mechanics and Statistics), Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Accounting, Business Studies, Economics, English, and English Literature.

The Student Information Plan (SIP) is a unique feature of the school that allows the students, parents, teachers and management to monitor the work done in the class and to keep abreast of the teaching/learning process.

The class rooms are very comfortable and well ventilated, and the Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Computer laboratories are well equipped

The Students are tutored by qualified teachers with a high sense of professional ethics. Parents, students and teachers share   healthy communication ties with the management so that the parents are very much involved in their children’s education experience.

International Examinations

In addition to the IGCSE and A/Levels (Edexcel, UK) the students sit the Edexcel Achievement Tests in Grades 5 and 8. Many students sit for the Australian International Assessment Exams too in English, Mathematics, Science and Computer Skills and have won 5 ‘First in Asia’ and 11’First in Sri Lanka’ gold medals  at the 2012 exams.

The Montessori and Primary Schools

Children take delight in coming to their Montessori classes. There are many art works on the class room walls, crafted by the little Montessori students and a colourful display of furniture for the use of the students – they are even allowed to select their own animal chair to sit on! And one is impressed and does not fail to notice the attention paid to the cleanliness of the school in general.

The curriculum adapted in the Montessori is AMI and the teachers delivering this curriculum are trained in recognized institutes here in Sri Lanka or have had prior foreign exposure working with similar age groups. Much care and love is put in to crafting the little minds and works of these little children. Being an ‘English Only’ Montessori which is the main medium of education at American International School, the Montessori gives a strong foundation to our students to build on as they proceed to the primary section of our school.

As our country has a multi-ethnic, multicultural population, it is necessary to provide and respectfully preserve the cultures that  have been nourished and nurtured in the country.  Thus, all the religious festivals are celebrated by the children, the morning prayers are said in respect to all the religions, in addition to English, Sinhala, Tamil and French are taught from Grade 1 onwards.
General knowledge quizzes, subject quizzes, spelling ‘Bee’s etc. are a usual part of the children’s activities.

Sports and Extra-Curricular activities

Sports and Extracurricular activities include Swimming, Badminton, Basketball, Cricket, Football, Tag Rugby, Scouting, Choir, Orchestra, Western Band and Hewisi Band.
