Music is an ever evolving art that sees many changes, advances and new styles brewing every single day. Yet, with so much innovation taking place in the music industry, it is amazing (curious) to see that much of the music from the early years still resonates with older as well as younger audiences, while the latest styles of music appeals to a very different (niche) group of people.

Sri Lankan music, is continually evolving and expanding in line with global trends as well. However, no Sri Lankan party or get together is complete without a touch of baila, and when you think of baila one recalls the names of the great ‘evergreen’ artistes and hits such as “Mango nenda”, “Dunhinda manamali”, and “udarate menike” immediately begin to reverberate (play) in your mind (head) . (It is thanks to) great singers, such as Annesley Malawana, (who) have given us this wonderful music that is ever popular and evergreen.

Annesley Malawana ventured in to the music scene in the 1960’s with Clarence Wijewardena and the Moonstones. After a small break the group reunited again in the 1970’s forming the band The Super Golden Chimes. Having taken a break (After retiring) from the music scene, Annesley Malawana returned and formed the group The Super Chimes in 2005.

In a conversation with this Evergreen and ever-popular singer, we enquired more in to the change of their name from Super Golden Chimes to Super Chimes. He says “we did not have the original line up from the Super Golden Chimes, some band members were out of the country or had decided to play with other bands. So it would not have been ethical to continue using the same name, hence the change to the Super Chimes”.

So how has Annesley Malawana remained popular over the years with his unique style of music? “Our unique style of music has always appealed to the audience, and also the harmonies and the lyrics are unique and it complements each other so I believe those are some of the factors. Also the lyrics had a very beautiful meaning, which is somewhat lacking in modern music.

Also we did not have any commercial purposes with our music, we are genuinely passionate about the music and we put 100% of our efforts in to it, this applies even for our shows – we make sure that every aspect is organised well ” said Mr. Malawana.

What is your opinion of the music of today? “well, modern music incorporates and has the benefit of using technology in perfecting the music as well as presenting it, which really facilitates a successful production.

We do have some very talented musicians in Sri Lanka, who are incorporating Western music styles and merging it well with our musical traditions. I would advice young artistes to learn more about the field, though we have been in the music field since the 1960s even I am still learning something new everyday” said Mr. Malawana.

Finally, what aspects of a show do you, as a performer, enjoy the most? He quickly replied “Seeing a happy audience, enjoying the music. That is something that cannot be replaced. So I invite everyone to our musical performance on the 13th of July and come enjoy the music from the golden years and relive the memories with your family and friends”
