The Eastern University in Batticaloa, has launched a crash programme to develop infrastructure facilities at the campus, with an allocation of Rs 300 million.

Vice Chancellor Dr K. Kobindarajah who took over some 14 months ago, told Education Times that, among the projects are, the setting up of a library complex, expansion of the Commerce, Management, and Arts faculties and the establishment of a Gymnasium.

Hostel facilities are also being expanded, particularly for Healthcare Science in Pillayarady

This year, the University admitted more than 1,290 students, with increased intakes including 621 students admitted to the Arts faculty, 250 students to the Science faculty and 210 students to the Commerce faculty. Two semi permanent hostel complexes are also being put up with the hope of renting them out to visitors during the vacation period.

Rs 31 million has also been allocated to the Swami Vipulananda Aesthetic Faculty, while Rs 15 million has been allocated to two other faculties in Trincomalee, which come under the Eastern University.
