A child-bride to be in a remote village in Trincomalee, was prevented from marrying by the intervention of a group of concerned villagers and a government officer, and ordered to return to school.

The 15-year-old, Year 10 girl studying in a village school was about to be given away in marriage to an 18-year-old boy intending to leave for overseas employment, when a group of villagers alerted a government officer in the area.
The couple’s parents were seeking an appointment with the Registrar of Marriages, but the government officer had already alerted the Registrar about the marriage.

“The parents were advised by the Registrar that it would be an offence to give an underage girl in marriage, when the child should be going to school,” an officer attached to the Muttur Divisional Secretary said.

Accordingly, the prospective groom was told to go ahead with his employment plans and could marry on his return.
The girl has now returned to school and is preparing for next year’s GCE- O/L.
