Vidyartha College paddlers dominated proceedings on the first day of the Central Province Open Table Tennis Championships at the Jagath Rajapaksa International Stadium at Nilambe in Kandy yesterday. Seven Vidyartha players, headed by the potential champion Udaya Ranasinghe, entered the quarterfinals of the boys’ Under-18 event that will be worked off today.

The odd boy out was Deshan Bandara of Kingswood. Top seeded Sheshala Bandara of Mahamaya Girls’ School beat Sanduni Nisansala of Gampola TTA in straight sets 11-4, 11-5 and 11-6 to book her berth in the Under-18 girls’ semi-final. She will meet Madushi Jatungaarachchi of Girls High School who got the better of Mahamaya’s Sanduni Kulatunga (11-8, 3-11, 11-4, 6-11, 11-7).

Sisters Minoli and Praveena Silva, both from Girls High School, will battle it out for a place in the final. Minoli beat Chathurika Samudini of Swarnamali in straight sets 11-2, 11-3 and 11-3 while Praveens beat Janani Wickremasinghe of Mahamaya in straight sets, 11-5, 11-7 and 11-3.

The tournament should be chock –full of interest today when reigning champion Nirmala Jayasinghe, Udaya Ranasinghe, C.P. Liyanage and Thilina Wijesiri (all ranked players) fight it out for honour sin the open event. – AK
