Ragama Cricket Club on Thursday received a generous sponsorship of rupees one million from Multi Finance PLC, their sponsors for the upcoming Sri Lanka Cricket Inter-Club Premier Limited Overs Championship.

Its President Roshan Abeysinghe revealed to the reporters that as one of the underprivileged Tier ‘A’ cricket clubs in the country, Ragama CC has performed on par while producing number of national cricketers. Yet it struggles to attract donors from the corporate sector.

“As a premier club we have to at least spend rupees seven million for a season and this sponsorship will definitely ease the burden off us. Many may presume that cricket is one of the richest sports in the country but it’s a rather incorrect assumption at club level,” he said.
Abeysinghe also stressed his concern over a statement made by higher sports officials who had said that Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) should cut down its spending on clubs. – NA
