All preparations are in place to kick start the 34th Bata-the Sunday Times Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year competition for the year 2013.

As our readers are aware, last year Trinity College first XI skipper Niroshan Dikwella was crowned as the Bata-the Sunday Times Schoolboy All-Island Cricketer of the Year 2012 in addition of being selected as the Best Captain and the Best Fielder.

Among other award winners were Mahanama College skipper Duleeka Tissakuttige who was picked as the Best Batsman, St. Sebastian’s left-arm spinner Amila Aponso who was adjudged the Best Bowler, Royal Panadura’s Kavindu Ashan who was selected as Best All-Rounder.

All schools competing in the ongoing Inter-School Division I tournament will be categorised in the All-Island Schools category including Royal and S. Thomas’ colleges who have opted to withdraw from the tournament officially this season. The remaining

schools, which are competing under the Division II and III categories, will come under Emerging Schools.

In 2013 too, schoolboy cricketers of Sri Lanka will stand a chance to grab one of these awards when an expert panel of selectors sit together in the month of May. All you have to do is perform to your potential, making your school cricket team proud while the deserving individuals will be duly honoured for their contributions in school cricket by Bata and the Sunday Times.

As last year’s skippers of Thurstan College, St. John’s Panadura and Gateway International Rajagiriya who were none other than Sajeewa Salgado, Sasindu Perera and Lakshan Kodagoda respectively, three lucky schoolboy cricketers will be able to win Most Popular Schoolboy Cricketer awards under three categories. They are, as all know, from the All-Island, Emerging and International schools categories. To make this event more vibrant Wijeya Newspapers publications the Sunday Times, Daily Mirror and Lankadeepa will publish coupons beginning from January 6, 2013.

This will enable our readers to vote in favour of their favourite schoolboy cricketer while Bata will be generous in giving out four lucky readers with gift vouchers on a weekly basis. Readers will however only have up to May 30 to take part in this competition as it will be the closing date. Bata, together with the Sunday Times will eagerly look forward to honour the respective winners of all categories at a gala ceremony which is expected in the month of August, 2013.
