The Association of Schools Rowing in Asia (ASRA) will hold their annual regatta at the Karachi Boat Club in Pakistan from September 6- 8 this year. ASRA officials said they expect 25 schools from at least five countries to participate this year.ASRA held their inaugural regatta in 2009 on the waters of the Bolgoda Lake in Moratuwa. Since then two more regattas were held, both at the Rowing Center in Chennai, India. Honorary Secretary of ARSA, Lasantha Weligala, said that the main idea behind the ASRA regatta is the bonding of Asian schools together, taking into consideration the political unrest in the region.

From the time it was inaugurated in 2009, the ASRA championships were won by Sri Lankan schools. In 2009, Ladies College were the champions of the women’s category and S. Thomas’ College won the men’s category. In 2010, S. Thomas’ were again the Overall Men’s Champions, and Bishop’s College took the women’s title. Last year Ladies College reclaimed the women’s trophy. However the men’s trophy went to the boys of the Lyceum School Karachi.

This year, Ladies’ College, Bishop’s College, Prince of Wales College, D. S. Senanayake College and Nalanda College will represent Sri Lanka at the ASRA regatta. The defending champions of the women’s category, the Ladies’ College crew led by Sanshya Subramaniam, will include both a senior crew and a junior crew. The Bishop’s College crew, headed by Captain Amashi De Mel, will consist of their junior and senior crews.

The Prince of Wales crew will comprise seven junior oarsmen and two senior oarsmen and is led by Captain Devshan Muddharage. The crew from D.S Senanayake College, captained by B. Nadeesha Dhanukshika, will consist of ten oarsmen with only one junior. This will be the first regatta for the Nalanda College crew, the latest entrant into the sport of rowing in Sri Lanka. The crew, led by W.M.K.Y.B Aluwihara, will consist of only a seven member senior crew.

The local crews will leave the island for the regatta during the first week of September.
