Sri Lanka Golf Championship Second Oldest in the World

The 125th Amateur Golf Championship of Sri Lanka, second only to the British Amateur Golf Championship will get underway at the Royal Colombo Golf Club ‘Ridgeways’ Course from September 3rd to the 9th, 2012.

The international challenge from India,Pakistan,Bangladesh,Malaysia and Afghanistan will add colour to celebrate the 125th playing of the Championship. The International Team Events will be conducted concurrently with the Open Team Events for the traditional ‘Dudley Senanayake Challenge Shield’ on Tuesday and Wednesday. These two Medal Rounds will also serve as the Qualifying Rounds to make the 32 player cut-off who will be drawn for the knock-out Match Play basis stage from Thursday (1st Round),Friday 2nd Round and Quarter Final,the Semi-final on Saturday and the 36 hole Final on Sunday.

The Opening Ceremony with the Hoisting of Flags will take place on Monday 3rd Sept; at the RCGC commencing at 4.00 p.m.Ana Punchihewa the President of the Sri Lanka Golf Union is determined and focused on making Sri Lanka the preferred Golfing destination in the world and believes that there is nothing better than achieving success and is confident that a Sri Lankan will win the Championship in this historic 125th year. N.Thangaraja currently the best amateur in Sri Lanka is Ranked 7th best in Asia and 54th in the world. Raja is also the defending Champion of the Sri Lanka Amateur Championship having Won in November 2011 played at the Victoria Golf Club Course in Digana. The Sri Lankan Challenge will comprise of other National Pool and Development squad players and some entries from the RCGC,NEGC,Victoria and Eagles Golf Club Trincomalee. The young RCGC Champ Zen Dharmaratne,the Runner-up Sachin De Silva,Rusi Captain,Alain Gyi andothers will also want to be there at the finish!

Three time Winner Simarjeet Singh from India the only Champion to win on all three Courses (RCGC,NEGC and VGC) is in the Official Indian Team. In order to celebrate the 125th Championship some familiar names like Taimur Hassan(Timmy) from Pakistan,Vickramjit Singh from India are also expected to give a fantastic competitive flavour to this historic Championship.

The Tournament promises great Golf and much excitement and the SLGU deserves all the support available to celebrate in style and fulfil the Vision of the SLGU Chief who has brought success to Sri Lanka winning the Cricket World Cup in 1996 which is worth repeating as the Youth of today were not there then and this feat is now long forgotten and has never been repeated since!! Will even the T20 World Cup be Won by Sri Lanka this September? Anyway a Sri Lankan has to Win the 125th Golf Championship says Ana !
