Top official held on bribe charge

A top official of a statutory institution was arrested yesterday by Bribery Commission officials for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs. 150,000, police said.

According to investigations Central Province Private Passenger Transport Authority Chairman W. P. Ranasinghe had allegedly solicited this bribe from the owner of a private bus in the Poojapitiya area to issue him a route permit. Mr. Ranasinghe is said to be an ex-member of a Pradeshiya Sabha in the Central Province and also an organiser of the Maskeliya seat for the SLFP.
He is being detained by the Katugastota Police pending further inquiries.
