Last rites of the Venerable Thera tomorrow

The last rites of the Most Venerable Weweldeniye Medhalankara Mahanayaka Thera, the Chief Incumbent of the Ramanya Chapter who passed away last Wednesday will take place tomorrow at the D. S. Senanayake National School grounds, Mirigama.
The Government has declared tomorrow as a national mourning day as a mark of respect to the late Mahanayake Thera.
All liquor outlets will also be closed tomorrow as a mark of respect to the Thera who passed away at the age 103.

The Mahanayake Thera was ordained at the age of 13 in 1922 at the Abayagiri temple in Anuradhapura. He dedicated his life to Buddhism. He has built many Buddhist temples in Nuwara Eliya, Anuradhapura, Halpe, Ampara, Neliama, Halugama, Nawana, Kosatadeniya and many other villages. He also pioneered projects to make Sunday Schools at the D. S. Senanayake National School in Mirigama, the Balawana Primary School, the Weveldeniya Maha Vidyalaya and supported the work of the Sasana Wardana Sunday School.

The Venerable Thera was conferred the honorary degree of the “Aggamaha Saddamma Jothika Daja” by the Burmese Government, was awarded the “Sahithya Chakrawarthi” by the Pali Buddhist University and the “Dharma Shastra Shiromani” by the Vidyalankara Pirivena.
