At least 100 cases where schoolchildren were sexually abused or defamed via internet including on Facebook accounts have been reported to the Cyber Crime Division of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) during the past month, a senior Police officer said.

He said in most of the cases the offender had obtained information via Facebook accounts and other social networks and thereafter developed a relationship leading to sexual abuse. In one of the cases a youth who had visited a house for computer repairs had developed a relationship and abused an underage girl in the house. The suspect has been taken into custody.

In another case a youth working in a private firm had built up a relationship with a schoolgirl from Colombo and later threatened to expose videos and pictures of the girl. The youth had later demanded money from the girl, who withdrew money from the bank and paid it. The youth was arrested later by the CID.

The officer said there were several other cases where schoolchildren had fallen victim after their personal details were obtained from social networks.

He said in several cases Police had been able to arrest the suspects, but further investigations were underway. “We request parents to be watchful of underage children using internet and involving in social networking,” the officer said.
