No Chinese Govt. involvement in Shaw Wallace land deal

There is no Chinese Government involvement in a prime property deal in Colombo City by a local company with foreign links, one of their spokespersons claimed yesterday.

Wen Zhong Lim, Deputy General Manager of Avic International Hotels Lanka said that the transaction by his company with Shaw Wallace and Hedges PLC to purchase their property bordering Galle Road at Kollupitiya was ‘purely a business deal.’
His claims came after the Sunday Times revealed exclusively on August 12 that the property had been earmarked for the Indian

High Commission to build a Cultural Centre. The Indian High Commission had sought External Affairs Ministry clearance when it was reported that the land in question was to be given to another party. The move drew an angry protest from India.
Mr. Zong Lim claimed he was not aware about New Delhi’s protest.

If pressure mounts on his company from purchasing this land, the project to build a 180-roomed mega hotel in the heart of Colombo will be abandoned and the property sold, he said.

It will deprive Sri Lanka of much needed foreign investment and creation of employment opportunities for youth in the hotel sector, he opined.
