China’s Minister of National Defence General Liang Guanglie ends his five-day visit to Sri Lanka today. General Guanglie, who arrived on Wednesday, was accompanied by a delegation of 23 high-ranking military officers.

During his visit, General Liang Guanglie called on President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa. He also visited the Defence Services Command and Staff College (DSCSC) at Sapugaskanda and the Panagoda Army Cantonment.

The visiting Chinese official and Sri Lanka’s Defence Secretary signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) under which China has pledged a grant of Chinese yuan 75 million (about Rs 1,564 million) towards the construction of a state-of-the-art auditorium complex at the Sri Lanka Military Academy in Diyatalawa.

The Chinese Defence Minster’s visit was in response to an invitation from the Commnander of the Sri Lanka Army, Lieutenant-General Jagath Jayasuriya, who visited China in June this year.
