Spelling Brilliance on Display Spelling Bee Championship 2025 by Lyceum Assessments
View(s):The Spelling Bee Championship 2025 by Lyceum Assessments concluded on a high note as the grand finale took place on the 17th and 18th of May, at the Tourist Board Auditorium in Colombo. This prestigious event brought together Sri Lanka’s top young spellers in a vibrant celebration of language mastery, competitive spirit, and academic excellence. With hundreds of supporters and academic leaders in attendance, the championship marked a significant milestone in Lyceum Assessments’ efforts to nurture confident, articulate learners across the island.
Now in its second year, the Spelling Bee brought together the top young spellers from across the island, selected from a pool of nearly 1,120 candidates who competed at the preliminary level from five districts. The preliminary rounds included both written and oral components designed to evaluate vocabulary, spelling accuracy, and comprehension. Only a select few finalists from Grades 2–3, 4–5, 6–7, and 8–9 advanced to this prestigious final event.
The championship finals were structured to challenge even the most skilled spellers. Finalists competed in three high-pressure rounds: an initial spelling round, a word meaning round that tested their grasp of vocabulary and context, and a final spelling challenge featuring increased difficulty. Throughout the competition, contestants could request alternate pronunciations, definitions, parts of speech, etymology, and example sentences, encouraging a deeper understanding of each word and its usage.
Champions and Runners-up were crowned in each category;
Grades 2–3
• Champion- Sehas Bandara – Apollo International School, Kandy
• Runner-up- Chethan Pentakota – Wycherley International School
Grades 4–5
• Champion- Abiru Akain Abeysundara – Colombo International School
• Runner-up- Radin Weerakoon – Lyceum International School, Nugegoda
Grades 6–7
• Champion- Aarosh Larian Hapuarachchi – Wycherley International School
• Runner-up- Yusra Jihad – Homeschooled
Grades 8–9
• Champion- Omiru Nandasiri – S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia
• Runner-up- Sharmin Anah – Lyceum International School, Kurunegala
All champions received trophies, gold medals, certificates, and cash prizes, while each finalist was honoured with a medal and a certificate of excellence. The atmosphere was one of celebration and pride, with academic leaders, school principals, teachers, and parents coming together to cheer on the competitors and acknowledge their hard work.
The Spelling Bee by Lyceum Assessments not only celebrates linguistic excellence but also aims to build confidence and nurture a love for learning in young students across the island. The event is proudly organized by the Department of Special Projects at Lyceum Assessments, reaffirming their commitment to holistic education and academic excellence.
