No registering students for intermediary classes: Minister
View(s):Strict orders have been issued not to register students for intermediary classes, except in exceptional cases, Education Minister Harini Amarasuriya said.
The minister said that there was competition to get children admitted to national schools, which make up 3.9 per cent of the school system.
There were shortcomings in the existing circulars and cabinet decisions taken earlier regarding the issue, she said.
Already there was a limitation of the number of students to be admitted to intermediary classes, she said, and accordingly only a maximum of 40 students could be accommodated from Grade 2-5 and 45 students from Grade 6-11.
The minister said they have proposed that the powers to register students in intermediary classes will be amended and suitable guidelines will be introduced to register children only in exceptional cases.
