Another 24,462 teacher vacancies remain: PM
View(s):Several teacher vacancies remained in the education sector, Education Minister Harini Amarasuriya told parliament this week.
Responding to a question raised by Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Mujibur Rahman, the Prime Minister said the recruitment of graduate teachers have been held up due to pending court cases.
She gave a breakdown of the teacher vacancies: The number of vacancies from Grade 1-5 (Sinhala medium) is 4,240, and (Tamil medium) is 2,827. Vacancies from Grade 6-11 (Sinhala medium) is 11,274 and (Tamil medium) is 6,121.
She said that plans were underway to recruit Teacher Assistants to schools in the estate sector, but again due to a court action the process had been delayed while there was a similar situation when plans were underway to recruit teachers for the Sinhala, Tamil and English mediums to national and provincial schools.
Mr Rahman pointed out that there has been no recruitment of teachers for the past two years and though graduates pass out from universities, they have not been absorbed to the teacher services.
The prime minister conceded that it was a serious problem as they have been unable to recruit the teachers, and that they have made proposals to recruit graduates as teachers.
