Drug awareness programmes for 2,500 schools
View(s):The government has identified 2,500 schools where programmes will be conducted to educate schoolchildren on the dangers of illicit drugs as well as identify those who try to lure children into such habits, Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala said.
The National Dangerous Drugs Control Board and the Women’s and Children’s Bureau of the Police will be conducting the programmes along with the assistance of teachers, he said.
He said that 200 schools that are located in areas where there is a high incidence of drug-related crimes will have more enhanced programmes to keep children away from being drawn into drug use or drug peddling.
The Police Special task Force too would be involved in the programme if the need arises, he said. (DWI)
