Multidisciplinary research conference at South Eastern University
View(s):A two-day international research conference on the theme “Digital Inequality and Social Stratification” organised by the Faculty of Arts and Culture, Postgraduate Division, South Eastern University of Sri Lanka; was held on 20 and 21 May at the University’s Educational Project Centre in Mount Lavinia under the co-chairmanship of the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Culture, Professor M M Basil and the Coordinator of the Postgraduate Division, Professor M I M Khalil.
At the commencement of the inaugural ceremony, Dr M Rizwan (Secretary, Two-Days Multidisciplinary International Conference 2025) delivered the welcome address. This was followed by the inaugural address by Dr Venat Rajadurai, Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology, Guru Nanak College, Chennai, India. This was followed by the guest of honor address by Dr Anuradha Rai, Principal, South Field College, Darjeeling, West Bengal.
Professor M M Basil, Conference Chair of the Institute and Dean, Faculty of Arts and Culture, said that digital divide, inequality of access to education and technology in society are the biggest factors that continue to create social stratification. He also stressed the need for multidisciplinary research to work together to address such issues.
Following this, Dr U L Abdul Majeed, Acting Vice-Chancellor, Southeastern University, who was the chief guest of the event, joined the event via Zoom technology. In his address, he said that international forums serve as a platform for creating global research dialogue between researchers and students. He also emphasised that an environment should be created that can create social change through education and research.
Next, the Head of the Department of Geography and Senior Lecturer K Nizamir introduced the keynote speaker of the event. Professor of War and Society and Professor of History at Princeton University, USA, Prof (Dr) Emmanuel H P M Kreike, spoke about the Digital Divide and the Social Stratification that results from it, and that these issues resonate in all sectors of society and that it is very important to understand these issues in a social and historical context.
The event was a highlight of emphasizing the importance of multidisciplinary education and research efforts being linked to the ability to face global challenges. Several prominent universities in Sri Lanka, such as the University of Colombo, the University of Kelaniya, Senior academics and researchers from the University of Peradeniya and the University of the East participated. In addition, various international academic experts and research groups from India, Iran, Pakistan and the United States participated. More than 110 abstracts were submitted for the forum. These cover a wide range of fields such as social sciences, technology, economics, education and human resource development.
