The Cabinet has approved a nationwide school-level road safety awareness campaign titled “Take Care – Surakimu Magathota” (Take Care – Let’s Ensure Road Safety), aimed at curbing the rising number of traffic accidents, aiming to instil road safety awareness among schoolchildren and promote responsible behaviour on the roads.

The initiative, headed by the Independent Television Network (ITN), will be carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education, the Sri Lanka Police, and the Department of Motor Traffic.

The programme is expected to be implemented across 100 education zones, engaging school traffic monitoring groups and prefect bodies. Organisers plan to directly involve 50,000 students—approximately 500 from each zone.

The proposal, presented by the Minister of Health and Mass Media Nalinda Jayatissa, received the Cabinet nod to move forward with implementation under the supervision of the Ministry of Health and Mass Media and in coordination with relevant institutions.
