The 48th annual Open Six Mile Sea Swim, conducted by the Kinross Swimming and Life Saving Club, will commence during the dusk hours at the Wellawatte beach today.
This annual event has attracted over 100 swimmers from various clubs, schools and the armed forces. The competition’s course begins at the sea near Wellawatte and finishes at the same spot following a journey through Mt. Lavinia’s seas. The organisers will give away certificates to those who finish this course under 4 hours and 30 minutes.
Eight different challenge trophies will be on offer under different categories. Last year the men’s race was won by Kaushal Manawadu, of St. Joseph’s College Colombo, who finished the race in 2 hours 25 minutes and 15 seconds. The women’s race was won by Imesha Sewwandi of Sri Devananda Vidyalaya Ambalangoda, who finished the course in 2 hours 46 minutes and 56 seconds. This sea swim, which is the most popular among long distance swimming competitions, is held annually in Sri Lanka under the purview of the Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Association.
