The two semi-finals of the 9th M.J.M. Lafir memorial snooker qualifying tournament which was played at the MICH billiard parlour yesterday saw M.I.M. Isham of MSC and M.Y.M. Ariff of host club MICH winning to qualify to the final which is scheduled to be played today at the same venue.
Isham defeated his club mate M. Riyaz Noor in the first five frames semi-final which was played in the morning session by 4-1 while Ariff underwent some anxious moments and had to pull out all his tricks out of the bag to secure a hard fought 4-3 in the second semi-final played in the evening against his club mate M. Lafir Fazal.
Meanwhile the billiard tournament which is being held concurrently saw fancied cueists having little difficulty to brush off the challenge of their opponents to advance to the next round.
The final of the qualifying tournament is scheduled to be played in two sessions today with the first being worked off from 10.00 a.m. and the second from 3.00 p.m.
The completion of the billiards and snooker tournament which is in progress now will see the main tournament getting underway where the first four from the qualifying tournament along with the top local and Indian cueists will battle it out for M.J.M. Lafir memorial trophy.
Apart from the trophy the champion in both the categories will be presented with a cash award of Rs. 50,000/- with runners up receiving Rs. 25,000/-
The 9th M.J.M. Lafir memorial snooker and billiards tournament is conducted by the Moors Islamic Cultural Home (MICH) in honour of billiard maestro M.J.M. Lafir who was the first ever sportsman to bring a World title to Sri Lanka by emerging the World billiards champion in 1973.
