Emerald glows at Vidura College athletics meet

Emerald House, with 302 points, emerged champions at the annual Inter-House Athletic Meet of Vidura College, which was held recently at the college ground.
Emerald faced very little opposition from the rest of the field, which comprised Sapphire, Ruby and Topaz, as the champions easily surpassed the triple figure mark. However a close tussle prevailed among other three houses where Topaz House emerged runners-up with 245 points. Sapphire House with 235 points finished at third position closely trailed by Rugby House, which accumulated 233 points.
Topaz athletes Piyath Rajapaksha and Yashodara Gunathilaka won the boys’ and girls’ championship titles respectively in the Under-21 age category as Akila Kumara Dep of Topaz and Lakshan Paranawithana of Sapphire shared the boys’ championship of the Under-19 category. Its girls’ championship was won by Methmie Jayasooriya of Emarald. Malaka de Silva of Sapphire and Asthika Liyanarachchi of Ruby shared the boys’ Under-17 championship as Muthumali Perera of Emerald clinched the girls’ award. Topaz’ Pabasara Wijesinghe and Emerald’s Hasara Wijeratne won the boys’ and girls’ championships respectively in the Under-15 age category. Ruby dominated the Under-13 age category as their members Benuka Geekiyanage and Pavisha Sampath won the boys’ and girls’ championships respectively. Tehan Hewahavita of Topaz and Vidura Abeydeera of Ruby won the Under-11 championships respectively in the boys’ and girls’ segments as Akash Karunanayake of Ruby and Risali Dharmasena of Sapphire emerged boys’ and girls’ champions respectively in the Under-9 age group.
The Chief Guest of the event was Upali Gunaratna, the deputy director of sports and physical education for the Western Province. At the occasion he stressed the value of sports and physical education at school level, saying it would help hone students’ characters as make them well-disciplined citizens. After being impressed by the athletic performances of Vidura students, Gunaratna hailed the organisers of the event for putting together a well-planned athletic meet.
The athletic meet for 2013 was organised by a committee headed by the Vidura principal, D.G. Sumanasekara, who was assisted by the school’s manager of sports Upali de Silva. – NA
