second day of the 24th National Youth Sports Festival at the Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo yesterday.

Out of the 23 final events which were held yesterday, 12 new meet records were established, following 10 new meet records which were shattered on the opening day. In addition R.K.A.P. Maduwanthi of Kurunegala District equaled her own meet record in the Over-20 Women’s high jump by clearing 1.74 metres.

A new meet record was set by the Matara team in the Over-20 Men’s 4×100 metre relay event with a record timing of 42.25 seconds as they erased the previous own record of 42.45 seconds. The Under-20 Boys relay team of Kalutara grabbed the 4×100 metre final after recording 42.37 seconds, as they bettered their own record of 42.66 seconds. Kandy District’s C.M.J. Jayasekara set a new meet record in the 400 metre Over-20 Men’s run by achieving 47.39 seconds. He bettered the record of 48.50 seconds set by K.K. Seneviratne in 2009. W.K.L.A Nimali from Hambantota finished the Over-20 Women’s 400 metre final with a timing of 56.40 seconds as she broke a 12 year old record set by Nilanka Sanjeewani of 57.90 seconds.

The meet record for the 110 metre Under-20 Boys event was shattered by A.A.S. Sandaruwan of Gampaha who finished the race by 14.69 seconds, bettering A.I. Nilaweer’s record of 15.06 seconds set last year. D.A.H. Wijesinghe of Kegalle bettered her own timing in the 100 metre Hurdles in the Over-20 Women’s category. Previous record holder of the Under-20 Boys Shot Put event, D.S. Sumanaweera of Colombo was placed second as Jaffna’s R. Nimalendra won the event with a record distance of 15.13 metres. Sumanaweera’s record which came in 2012 was 13.97 metres. W.D.P. Wijesinghe of Anuradhapura set a new meet record in Over-20 Men’s high jump event by clearing 2.05 metres as he bettered G.L.A.S. de Peiris’ record by a slender 0.01 metre. In the Over-20 Men’s javelin throw event D.S. Ranasinghe from Galle reached 68.75 metres to better Waruna Lakshan’s record set in 2009 by a narrow 0.01 metre. T.M.H. Battage of Matara also broke the record in the Under-20 Girl’s shot put event by achieving 10.93 metres, as she cleared M.T. Anushka’s record by 0.40 metres. G.K.D.S. Piyaratne of Colombo set a new meet record in the Under-20 Boys long jump event by jumping 7.20 metres. The meet jointly organized by the national Youth Services Centre and Sri Lanka Federation of Youth Clubs will end today.
