Defence Services retain A.A. Virasinghe Trophy

By virtue of a 5-1 win over Matale Hockey Association, Defence Services retained the A.A. Virasinghe Challenge Trophy for another year when the final of the 56th Senior National Hockey Championship was worked off at the Astro Turf on Sunday. However, at the short whistle it was Matale HA in the lead with one goal to nil.

The scoring was opened in the 20th minute when left extreme C.A. Welagedara sounde the boards to put Matale HA one up.

After the turn around, R.A. D. Ranasinghe equalized for Defence Services in the 48th minute and three minutes later they went ahead when right extreme I.K. Jayasundera got his stick onto the ball. One minute later, centre forward M.M. Mulafer got his act working to make the score 3-1 in favour of the Defence Services with a field goal. In the 62nd minute Defence Services stretched their lead by another goal when M.M. Mulafer fired his second goal (4-1) and seven minutes later, Jayasundera made it 5-1.

Matale HA took possession of the M.I. Bin Ismail Challenge Trophy and Mercantile HA won the D.S. Wijeratne Challenge Trophy.

The most outstanding player was R.A.D. Ranasinghe of the Defence Services.

The game was refereed by Indrawansa Herath and M. Naushad, while N. Paraneedaran was the third umpire.
