Screening Hollywood movies every Tuesday, the American Center is to screen four films set on a variety of themes and different presentations from independent films to science fiction.

Starting from ‘My Own Private Idaho’, Gus Van Sant’s classic independent film which is loosely based on Shakespeare’s Henriad, the film on September 4 stars River Phoenix and Keanu Reeves. In this retelling, Reeves plays a wealthy young man who spends his time with a gang of street kids while he waits for his inheritance; Phoenix is his troubled best friend. The two set off on a voyage of self-discovery that is as unique as it is ultimately revealing.

‘Reality Bites’ on September 11 depicts a group of close friends who awkwardly adjust to adulthood in this time capsule of a comedy. They are overeducated and underemployed, too immature to know how to cope with the complexities of their relationships, but old enough to know that they must learn. Ben Stiller’s film is smart and confident, with a likeable cast and a witty script. It stars With Winona Ryder, Ethan Hawke, Janeane Garofalo, and Ben Stiller.

J.J. Abrams’ science fiction ‘Super 8’ which screens on September 18 revolves around a group of aspiring filmmakers who go into the forest to make a movie and discover a secret that could destroy their entire world.

Ridley Scott’s ‘Blade Runner’ will be screened on September 25 and it is the reconstructed version of the sci-fi noir favourite which stars Harrison Ford as a retired detective who is called back to the police force in order to track down artificial humans called “replicants” in Los Angeles circa 2019. As his investigation takes him through the city’s dystopian landscape, he is thrust into an adventure that raises questions about his own existence.

The film screening starts at 6 pm and seating is on a limited and is first-come, first-served basis .
