Wishing a Meaningful International Day of Education

Touching the Future: Education in the Age of Artificial Intelligence.
View(s):

Education has always been humanity’s most powerful tool for transformation. From chalkboards to digital classrooms, every generation has reshaped learning using the best tools of its time. Today, Artificial Intelligence (AI) stands as the most influential of these tools  not to replace education, but to redefine how learning touches lives, minds, and futures.

On this International Day of Education, we are reminded that education is not merely about content delivery or examination results. It is about empowering learners, bridging inequities, and preparing societies for uncertainty. AI, when used responsibly and human-centrically, offers unprecedented opportunities to do exactly that.

AI as a Partner in Learning, Not a Substitute for Teachers

Contrary to common fears, AI is not here to replace educators. Instead, it has the potential to amplify the educator’s role automating repetitive tasks, offering real-time learning insights, and enabling personalised learning pathways. Teachers remain the heart of education, while AI becomes a supportive co-pilot, freeing educators to focus on creativity, mentorship, empathy, and critical thinking.

Personalised, Inclusive,and Accessible Education

One of AI’s most powerful contributions lies in personalisation. Learners do not think, learn, or progress at the same pace. AI-driven systems can adapt content to individual learning styles, languages, and abilities  making education more inclusive for students with diverse needs, learning difficulties, or geographical barriers.

For countries like Sri Lanka and many parts of the Global South, AI can help close long-standing educational gaps by democratising access to quality learning, even in resource-constrained settings.

Human Values Must Lead Technological Progress

However, technology alone is not the solution. The future of AI in education must be ethical, transparent, and human-centred. We must teach learners not just how to use AI, but how to question it, critique it, and use it responsibly. Education systems must emphasise emotional intelligence, ethics, creativity, and social responsibility qualities no algorithm can replicate.

From Memorisation to Meaningful Learning

AI challenges us to move beyond rote learning. When machines can retrieve information instantly, the true value of education lies in sense-making, problem-solving, collaboration, and innovation. The classrooms of tomorrow must prioritise activity-based learning, critical inquiry, and real-world application  preparing students
not just for jobs, but for
meaningful lives.

A Shared Responsibility

Governments, universities, educators, industry, and researchers must work together to ensure AI strengthens education rather than deepens divides. Investment in teacher training, curriculum redesign, and ethical AI governance is essential to ensure long-term impact.

A Message for International Day of Education

On this International Day of Education, let us celebrate not only learning itself, but the people who make learning humane  teachers, researchers, students, and innovators. Let us embrace AI not as a threat, but as a tool guided by human values, ensuring that education remains a force for equity, dignity, and hope.

Happy International Day of Education.

May knowledge continue to open doors, shape futures, and touch lives  with wisdom, compassion, and responsibility.
