Amendments to Universities Act meant to depoliticise: PM
View(s):Prime Minister and Minister of Educational and Higher Education Harini Amarasuriya told Parliament that the amendments to the Universities Act will not harm the autonomy of universities in any manner.
“This is not an attempt to politicise the universities. This will in fact depoliticise them. University academics have been advocating for long that the process of faculty level appointments be done in a democratic manner. We have taken note of all these views and are amending the Act,” she said while winding up the debate on the Universities Act.
The Bill was passed in Parliament on Friday without a vote.
It expands the eligibility for the post of dean to include senior professors, professors, associate professors, and senior lecturers (Grade I) of the relevant faculty, to be appointed by the faculty board. The act also limits appointments to a maximum of two terms for deans.
In addition, the amendment stipulates that no individual may be appointed head of the same department for more than one term or hold the position for more than two consecutive terms.
